When connected, the mating pipe and/or pipe fitting is close to the shoulder to eliminate a pocket and provide a smooth flow of the pipe and/or pipe fitting contents. It may have side and/or heel inlet(s). It is designed to connect two sections of pipe in a straight line to a third section at right angles.
